Lecture:"Minoan Art: the Aesthetics of a Ritual Culture"

Event Date:
Saturday, May 28, 2011 - 18:30

The Minoan civilization is exemplified by a complex and compelling visual culture. Join Dr. Mary L. Hart, Associate Curator of Antiquities, J. Paul Getty Museum, as she explores the aesthetics of vivaciously painted frescoes; sculptures and vessels hewn from ivory, silver, and stone; masterfully worked gold jewelry and bronzes; and intricately carved gems of carnelian, amethyst and onyx – to name a few examples – which embody the tastes and customs of the most enigmatic society of antiquity. This event was co-sponsored by SFSU’s Classics Department, Museum Studies Program, the Museum Studies Student Association, and Humanities West.
