"Tempted by Happiness: Kazantzakis's Post-Christian Christ" This talk focused on theological interpretation of the Christ figure in The Last Temptation of Christ, showing how Kazantzakis uses traditional Biblical materials for his own purposes. Peter Bien is Professor of English and the Frederick Sessions Beebe '35 Professor in the Art of Writing Emeritus at Dartmouth. His major translations include Kazantzakis's Report to Greco and The Last Temptation of Christ as well as Stratis Myrivilis's Life in the Tomb. He has also co-edited with Darren Middleton, God's Struggler: Religion in the Writings of Nikos Kazantzakis.
